Chapter Nine

THE NEXT MORNING, TESS was very, very grateful that Darcy seemed not only fairly well rested, but she also didn’t show any signs of embarrassment or unease about the night before.

Darcy gave her a shy look. “Will you cook for me again tonight?”

Tess wanted to high-five her. Darcy had not only refused to get tied up in worrying about sex, she’d come right out and asked for something she wanted. That was progress. “I’d be happy to. Very happy.”

After breakfast, they braved the windy, cold day to walk around the neighborhood. Darcy seemed to be affected by the cold more than normal, and Tess idly considered getting her a parka so she could ditch the cloth coat.

“How are you feeling today?” Tess asked as Darcy stopped to look at a lavishly decorated hotel.

“Not bad. I’m a little disappointed in myself for not handling the pain better, but I don’t know how to change that.”

“You needed more pain meds. I was reading stories on the internet and some people get a prescription that lasts for a month or more. They were very miserly with you. But I’m worried about taking you to see another doctor.”

“No more doctors. The last one tried to file a report because she thought I was battered. If I tried to get more drugs, they’d probably think I was a junkie. It’s not worth it.”

“Well, how’s the rest of you?” She squeezed her arm. “No regrets about last night?”

“Regrets?” Darcy stopped and stared, her eyes wide. “No! Do you have any?”

“I don’t regret much,” Tess admitted. “And being affectionate with you is something I’ll never look back on with anything other than pleasure.”

“You scared me for a minute. If you get sick of me, it’d be tough to have much distance in a little room.”

“I’m glad you showed me what you wanted. I was a little hesitant, but not because I’m not into you.” At Darcy’s raised eyebrow, she continued. “From what you’ve told me, you’ve only had sex with people you were committed to.”

“Yeah, that’s true. But I think I would have grown out of that in the last eight years. I need more experience. I just didn’t have the opportunity.”

“You understand that I’m not in a position to be in a long-term relationship?”

“I am,” Darcy said. She waited a second, then laughed nervously as she added, “But I can’t guarantee I won’t try to worm my way into your heart.”

Tess stopped her and looked deeply into her eyes. “You’ve already done that. Even though we won’t be together for a long time, you’ve gotten inside, Darcy.” She patted over her chest. “Right in here.” Tess took her hand and they started to walk again. “I’ve had some very meaningful relationships that didn’t last long. That doesn’t mean they weren’t important.”

They were quiet for a few minutes, just looking at the houses festooned with holiday greenery. “I don’t know much about your past relationships,” Darcy said. “I assume Sam was really important, since you were together for three years, but I’m not sure of that.
